The uMngeni Unemployed Graduates Forum (MUGF) was established in 2017 by a group of unemployed graduates from uMgneni Local Municipality. Driven by their own experiences of unemployment and frustration with the lack of government support, these graduates sought to create an organisation that would address the socio-economic challenges facing young people in their communities. The MUGF existence aims to tackle the pressing issue of youth unemployment, particularly among young women, and its associated challenges, including drug abuse, physical and emotional abuse, and rape amongst others.    

The organisation actively fosters robust partnerships with a diverse array of stakeholders, demonstrating a strong commitment to collaborative initiatives and broader societal impact. These key partnerships include esteemed bodies such as the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature, the Foundation for Human Rights, Ukusekela, the South African National Aids Council (SANAC), the Democracy Development Programme, and the Aids Foundation South Africa. Through these strategic alliances, the organisation is able to implement a wide range of impactful programmes, advocate effectively for crucial policy changes, and drive significant social transformation.

Beyond these foundational partnerships, the organisation also maintains vital collaborations with local government entities and various government departments to ensure comprehensive community engagement and service delivery. These collaborations extend to the uMngeni Local Municipality, the uMgungundlovu District Municipality, the South African Police Service (SAPS), the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development, the Department of Health, and the Department of Social Development. Furthermore, the organisation works closely with numerous local Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), leveraging their expertise and community reach.

Since its inception, the uMngeni Unemployed Graduates Forum (MUGF) has made significant strides in addressing the socio-economic challenges facing young people in uMngeni Local Municipality and surrounding areas.  

These accomplishments highlight the organization's multifaceted approach and lasting impact:

• Masibambisane GBV Project: MUGF successfully launched the Masibambisane GBV Project, a pioneering initiative that fostered collaboration among diverse stakeholders. This project was instrumental in addressing the critical issues of Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) while simultaneously empowering young people. By bringing together various entities, MUGF amplified its reach and effectiveness in tackling these pervasive societal challenges.

• Local Stakeholders Committee (LSC) Establishment: A key strategic achievement for MUGF was the establishment of the Local Stakeholders Committee (LSC). This committee serves as a vital nexus, uniting local government, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), and private sector organizations. The LSC's primary objective is to create a synergistic environment where resources and efforts are pooled, thereby significantly amplifying the collective impact of all involved parties on community well-being and development.

• Training and Skills Development: MUGF has been a beacon of opportunity for the youth, providing invaluable training and skills development opportunities to hundreds of young individuals. These programs are meticulously designed to equip participants with practical, relevant skills that enhance their employability and overall life prospects, contributing directly to economic empowerment and poverty reduction.

• Advocacy for Policy Changes and Social Transformation: Beyond direct service provision, MUGF actively engages in advocacy, championing policy changes and social transformation. Through persistent and strategic efforts, the organization has contributed significantly to the creation of a safer and more equitable society, working towards systemic changes that benefit all citizens.

• Online Application Assistance: Recognizing the digital divide and its implications, MUGF provides crucial assistance to youth and high school learners with online applications. This service helps bridge the gap in access to educational and employment opportunities that increasingly rely on digital platforms, ensuring that aspiring students and job seekers are not left behind.

• Computer Centre Initiative: A forward-thinking initiative by MUGF is its Computer Centre. This center is dedicated to equipping individuals with essential computer and digital skills. In an era dominated by rapid technological advancements, the Computer Centre plays a pivotal role in preparing community members for the demands of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, ensuring they are competitive and adaptable in a rapidly evolving global landscape.

• HIV Treatment Literacy: educating youth about HIV Treatment MUGF is dedicated to promoting HIV Treatment Literacy, a crucial initiative focused on educating young people about various aspects of HIV treatment. This program aims to empower youth with comprehensive knowledge, enabling them to make informed decisions about their health and well-being.  Educating youth about the groundbreaking scientific evidence that a person living with HIV who is on effective ART and has an undetectable viral load cannot sexually transmit HIV. This knowledge is vital for reducing stigma and promoting healthier relationships.
